Any couple that would like a smoother transition as their family grows can benefit from a postpartum doula.
There are certain situations in which a new or growing family is especially grateful to receive extra support. For example:
- A difficult childbirth (including a long labour, instrumental delivery or Caesarean birth) may leave a new mother
drained and in physical discomfort. These mothers need and deserve additional postpartum support.
- Olim Chadashim who have a baby in their first year in Israel are tackling many transitions at
once, and will appreciate an extra pair of hands and the calm presence of a doula.
- When extended family is not nearby the loving help new parents always hoped for may not be
readily available. A postpartum doula can provide a caring support when family is far away.
- A double (or triple) brachah! Parents of multiples know that they will need additional help with the
babies when they arrive; a doula can help keep the household running smoothly with her practical support.
- A mother who has previously experienced postpartum depression deserves the best care. Women who receive
practical and emotional support following birth have been shown to have greater nursing success,
greater self-confidence and less postpartum depression.
- Parents of a premature baby may be dealing with the shock of early labour, as well as possible medical complications for the baby.
- Parents of a baby with a medical condition, whether known and anticipated during pregnancy or discovered soon after birth, will be
juggling a heavier load both emotionally and physically.
